The topic of today’s post is only relevant to what he says ~2:38.
**To provide some context about the speaker: his name is Hyunjoon Yoo and he is a professor at Hongik University. He’s studied at Harvard and MIT for a Master’s in architecture.
To summarize:
We perceive the world by 200 images/second taken by our retina & processed by our brains
Us humans can perceive the three-dimensional world only partially through short-term memory —> we remember the world 1 second, 2 seconds, and 3 seconds ago through images —> then we put these images together in our heads to create dimensions
This is how we perceive space. When I say space, I mean “the dimensions of height, depth, and width within which all things exist and move,” according to merriam-webster.
I know that this video is about the meta-verse. However, I wanted to connect the information given above to one of my favorite things to think about: smell. More specifically, I am extremely interested in how our sense of smell affects our experience in different spaces (commercial & residential spaces to be more specific).
Mind you that I am NOT :( an expert in these areas. Just highly interested and fascinated.
But I’ve read some books about them and I’ve learned that out of our 5 senses, smell is the most instinctive, and direct sense that connects to our brains. Also, we remember 1% of what we’ve touched, 2% of what we’ve heard, 5% of what we’ve seen, 15% of what we’ve tasted, and 35% of what we’ve smelled. This is because smell is processed by the olfactory bulb, which has a direct connection to the two brain areas that are implicated in emotion & memory.
So I connected what I learned from the video to my knowledge about the sense of smell. I am typing this up in my room right now, but when this idea first hit me, I screamed so loud and jumped up to explain this to my poor sister who just happened to be next to me xD.
So maybe that is why curating a scent for a curated space is so important. For example, BMW commissioned a specific scent for their cars, auto shows, & events. There is a company called SCENTCOMMUNICATION in Germany that did this with BMW. You can also look at their website for other projects that they have done.
So this was just me trying to summarize everything that was going on in my head when I made the connections as I was watching the video a few weeks ago. I hope to practice my communication skills to share my thoughts to others in a more tangible sense ! : ) It’s actually my first time typing my thoughts out like this & it’s so much harder than I thought, wow. I can also have this conversation for hours until my throat is all sore but writing it is very different. It’s so difficult to stay within one topic that I’ve set..lol.
Anyways, I hope you stay hydrated and curious everyone : ) I will be back shortly.
