thought two
This is me writing about a instagram post I made in January 18th of 2021.
I was watching a french Netflix show and below is what I said about “J’aime bien être avec toi.”
The verb être means “I am.” Knowing this fact can help me understand why I interpreted the use of “being” as something deeper than how we usually use that word in these sentences. It’s wonderful because as english speakers, our first instinct is to understand the phrase “I love being with you” as something more in the lines of loving their presence or loving spending time with them. But I do think it is a bit different. Very similar, but I believe it would mean so much more if we understood the phrase in relation to our existence. To being able to share each other’s time in existence.
I am not a linguistic expert but I do think this isn’t just jibberish im blabbering out because you can see that in the dictionary, the word “being” is also a noun to represent existence or “nature or the essence of a person,” according to the merriam-webster dictionary. But when we usually use it in sentences like “He’s being funny,” we use “being” as the present participle of “to be,” meaning an adj would come after that.
So although grammatically, we would translate the french phrase with “I love” —> verb, “being”—> noun form of being, we are comprehending the sentence like we use “being” as a verb. Super strange in my opinion.. XD. I know that “being” is used as a noun in the translation because the preceding word is “with,” which is a preposition that usually comes after nouns or pronouns. This would make it most likely that “being” is a noun, not a verb (and we already have a verb: I love).
Wow this is so mind blowing. I may be somewhat off the grid but I searched up each part of the sentence in the dictionary and I want to believe this is right because I’m having lots of fun right now!!!!!
So in conclusion, I’ve decided that I’am completely changing the way I understand the sentence “I love being with you.” I won’t use it like I am saying I love spending time with you because it (to me) does not mean that anymore. Thinking about this has made me realize how special this phrase is!! It can hold so much more meaning if we wanted it to!!
I am just now realizing that this might have been a bit confusing ㅋㅋ. Please contact me if you want to talk about it more or if you got any questions about what I just said!! I would love to have conversations about this muahahaha.
Oh! I dont know if you guys saw, but in the “contact” section of my website, you can contact me anonymously. Obviously you can put down an email if you want me to get back to you, but the fields don’t have to be your actual name/email. I will get notified either way!
